By TJ HEMLINGER Staff Writer Blue River Senior Housing received a check for $2.3 million Friday from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with the help of U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind. The money will completely finance a 22-unit complex in Churubusco, with construction expected to begin this fall and be completed in approximately 10 months. The housing will be “very low income senior affordable housing” for those 62 and over, according to Kathy Heuer, president of the board of directors for Blue River. Some of the units will be handicap accessible, and all will be handicap adaptable. The money comes from a HUD 202 grant. “No grant money comes back to the community unless it’s written well,” Souder said. “Our office does not write grants. You should credit the result to the community. The role of our office is to advocate. We’re proud this money is coming to the community. “Senior housing is one of the major challenges when it comes to public housing. Food, housing and health are big challenges when it comes to seniors. It’s an additional challenge when it comes to housing seniors who have less. When prices go up, seniors can only adjust down. This is coming at a very important time. In a town like Columbia City, it’s a terrible challenge. Money for this is often skewed toward major metropolitan areas.” Heuer said, “This will be our fourth building, and we’re so pleased the government has chosen us.”
