Workers received notice of shutdown
By TJ HEMLINGER Staff Writer Fort Wayne Foundry has informed United Autoworkers Local No. 2242 that it has shut down the local plant in Whitley County on Cardinal Drive in Industrial Park, throwing 265 unionized men and women out of work. The Fort Wayne site also was affected by the closing. Phil Spradling, president of the local in Whitley County, said that workers were sent home last Thursday and the union officials were notified Friday that the plant would close. The plant made parts solely for General Motors, which filed for bankruptcy today in an effort to reorganize and stave off collapse. Fort Wayne Foundry made castings, intake manifolds, upper and lower water pumps, timing chain covers and oil pans for GM vehicles. Spradling said that workers that had earned vacation time would not be paid for that time and would lose any vacation that had accrued. “There’s a lot of people with three or four weeks of vacation that are going to be out a couple thousand dollars, thanks to ‘Obama Motors,’” he said, referring to the president’s bailout plan for the giant automaker.
