By Chris Meyers Staff writer A local woman whose SUV was struck by a semi was airlifted from the scene of the crash Thursday afternoon in Columbia City. According to Columbia City police, 38-year-old Tara L. Brandon was southbound on state Route 9 when she apparently ran the red light at the intersection with U.S. 30 and was struck by a westbound semi. The semi screeched to a halt across nearly all four lanes of north and southbound traffic, and the impact sent Brandon’s SUV into a guardrail several yards west of the intersection. Initial reports indicated she suffered internal injuries, but that she was also released later that day. A representative from Parkview Hospital’s news line also said the hospital did not have Brandon in their system. Columbia City firefighters had to remove the severely damaged driver door on Brandon’s SUV so rescuers could reach her, but the struggle wasn’t finished. A large and a small dog were in the SUV with Brandon and did not make the firefighters’ or medics’ jobs any easier. Passersby and witnesses were able to help firefighters remove the two dogs, which appeared to be uninjured. The driver of the semi, 43-year-old Thomas Hooper of Rochester, was also not injured. Although police believe Brandon ran the red light at the intersection, dispatch reports show a driver called several minutes earlier to report that Hooper’s semi ran the red light at the intersection of U.S. 30 with county Road 800 East. Nearby roads became parking lots as all southbound traffic on state Route 9 and westbound traffic on U.S. 30 was diverted onto Frontage Road. The area was clear of debris by about 7 p.m.
