By BECKY HAND Community editor The American Legion’s Past Commander is given the honor of riding in the Old Settlers’ and American Legion Festival parade as Parade Marshal. This year, the honor goes to Frank Daniels, a resident of Columbia City for the past 28 years. Born in Happy, Kentucky to Elmer and Marie Daniels, he graduated from Dilce Combs High School and joined the Armed Forces at the age of 17. He married Roxie (Sewell) and they are celebrating their 25th anniversary this month. He has four children: Kari Boyle of Fort Wayne; and Shari Reust, Leslie Hearld and Shannon Anderson, all of Columbia City. He also has 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He served in three branches of the service, the Army, the Air Force and the Air National Guard between 1959 and 1978. He is a Vietnam-era veteran, serving in the European Air Lift, the Berlin Crisis, the Algerian Crisis and the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. He retired from the service in 1978 and in 1980 came to Columbia City to help out at the American Legion “for a year.” He is still here 28 years later. Daniels holds a lifetime membership at the VFW and the DAV. He is now the home manager and financial officer at the American Legion.
