By Chris Meyers Staff writer Four fire departments battled a house fire Saturday afternoon which destroyed a South Whitley area family’s house and killed their dogs that were inside the home. A passerby at the scene said he was on his way to Fort Wayne when he passed the house at 8785W 400S and called 911 when he saw smoke roll from the roof line. The owners of the home, Rick and Kathy Hicks Jr., were not home at the time of the fire. A neighbor, Grace Jenkins, said the couple had three dogs as pets, but did not know if they had sold the youngest yet. A report from the local American Red Cross unit, which was called to offer aid to the family, said the pets did not survive the fire. Firefighters from Cleveland and Richland townships, Jackson Township in Kosciusko County and Sidney Fire Department fought the fire amid high winds that whipped smoke through the area. Jenkins said at the peak of the fire that she couldn’t see the Hicks’ home from her own porch just several yards away across the road. The Whitley County Fire Investigation Team was called to the scene, but officials were unavailable for comment this morning.
