By Chris Meyers Staff writer What started out a traffic stop for a mere improper lane change resulted in more than two pounds of cocaine being found in a car Saturday, according to the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office. According to the case report, a city police officer was parked in a crossover on U.S. 30 near county Road 100 South when he noticed a car suddenly slow down below the speed limit while it traveled with a group of cars. The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Ruben W. Ervy of Fort Wayne, then allegedly made an illegal lane change and cut in front of a semi, at which point he was stopped by city police officer Scott Leatherman, according to the report. Ervy said he was on his way to Chicago to visit family, and didn’t have any luggage because everything he needed was in Chicago. A license check on Ervy found he was a habitual traffic violator and police placed him under arrest. During a search of the car, police found a backpack that had a sealed package in it full of a yellow powdery substance which tested positive for cocaine in a field test, according to the report. The package weighed just more than two pounds. Ervy told police the car was his, but he had no idea what was in the bag in the trunk and did not wish to speak to police any further. He faces a class A felony charge of dealing cocaine, a class D felony charge of maintaining a common nuisance and a class D felony charge of driving while suspended. He immediately posted a $50,000 surety bond once booked at the Whitley County Jail. He had his first appearance this morning in Whitley Circuit Court where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He said he plans to hire his own attorney. Columbia City Police Chief Mike Petersen commended Leatherman, who recently completed drug interdiction training, for the arrest.
