Candidate claims Souder is not a fiscal conservative
By DEANNA POGORELC Staff Writer A Fort Wayne attorney announced this morning his intention to run against U.S. Congressman Mark Souder in the 2010 Republican primary for Indiana’s third district seat. Phil Troyer said in a press release that he decided to run when Souder voted in favor of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout in September 2008. Troyer’s campaign will focus on spending issues, he said. Troyer, who grew up in Etna Green and Shipshewana, currently serves as general counsel for a national financial services firm. His political experience traces back to a summer internship with former Congressman Dan Coats during his senior year in high school. After graduating from college, Troyer went to Capitol Hill as an aid for Coats and was eventually asked to run a Northeast Indiana district office for Coats and Lugar. Troyer also managed Rick Hawks’ 1990 congressional campaign and ran a low-budget campaign for himself for Congress in 1992, when he was a first-year law student in Bloomington. Troyer said he has been out of politics since then didn’t plan to return until recently. Troyer said Monday he planned to present 50 examples of spending increases that Souder voted in support of and he would have opposed at his press conference this morning. “We need a congressman who doesn’t just talk like a conservative but actually votes like one in Washington D.C.,” he said. “As a father, I can’t sit back any longer and watch our congressmen waste our hard-earned dollars.” |
