Whitko, CC wrestling take top spots at tourney |

By MARK PARKER For The Post & Mail Syracuse — Whitko and Columbia City high school wrestling teams traveled north Saturday to Syracuse to compete in the Wawasee Wrestling Classic. Both teams acquitted themselves well, with the Wildcats going 4-0 to take the team title and the Eagles finishing second with a 3-1 record. In round one the Wildcats squared off against Hamilton Heights. Whitko won 11 of the 14 weight classes in taking the win by a 61-14 score. Winning for the Wildcats with pinfalls were Jordan Gilbert at 119 pounds, Dylan LeTourneau at 125 pounds, Josh Busenbark at 140 pounds , 152-pounder Cord Feasby and Austin Striggle at 171 pounds. Wes Gensch at 189 pounds and Drake Brainard in the 285 pound weight class also took pinfall wins for the Wildcats. Chas Busz at 103 and Cody Bays at 135 pounds took wins by decision and Daniel Rothgeb picked up a win by injury default to round out the scoring for the Wildcats in round one. In the opening round, Columbia City was matched up against Bishop Dwenger. The Eagles scored a 45-32 win over the Saints behind wins in nine of the 14 weight classes, with eight of those wins coming by way of pins. Picking up pinfall wins for the Eagles were Bryce Forrester at 103 pounds, Derek Kissinger at 112, Ethan Craig in the 125 pound weight class, and Eric Shepherd at 140 pounds. Also winning by pinfall were Kolton Coyle at 152 pounds, Nathan Strange (215) and Jon Myers at 285 pounds. T.J. Pettigrew added a decision win for the Eagles. In what would be the decisive match of the day, Columbia City and Whitko met in round two. With matches starting at 140 pounds the Wildcats jumped in front when Busenbark recorded a pinfall win at 4:41 of his match with Columbia City’s Eric Shepherd. Columbia City senior Jeremy Bailey tied the match with a pinfall win over Whitko’s Tyler Miller. Cord Feasby put Whitko back on top with a 9-5 decision win at 152 pounds. The Eagles went back into the lead when T.J. Pettigrew recorded a pinfall win at the 1:10 mark of the match at 160 pounds. The seesaw contest swung back to the Wildcats’ side when Austin Striggle pinned Addison Kreider. Columbia City went back in front taking the next two matches. At 189 pounds Columbia City’s Alex Parker pinned Whitko’s Wes Gensch at the 3:02 mark of their match, and Nathan Strange scored a 17-14 win at 215 pounds to put the Eagles up 21-15. Whitko’s Drake Brainard scored a pin at 285 pounds to knot the score at 21-21. At 103 pounds Chas Busz scored a pinfall win over Bryce Forrester to put the Wildcats up 27-21. Kissinger scored a 12-0 major decision over Austin LeTourneau at 112 pounds to cut the margin to 27-25. The Wildcats took control at the that point scoring pinfall wins in the final four matches to account for the final 51-25 win. Closing out the match for Whitko were Jordan Gilbert, Dylan LeTourneau, Danile Rothgeb and Cody Bays. In the next round Columbia City faced Hamilton Heights. The Eagles came away with a 34-26 win. Taking pinfall wins for the Eagles were Coyle at 152 pounds, and Alex Parker at 189 pounds. Derek Kissinger (112), Justin Trigg at 135, and T.J. Pettigrew at 160 picked up decision wins, while Leland Roberson and Jeremy Bailey picked up forfeits for the Eagles. Whitko picked up a 48-25 win over the host Wawasee Warriors. Picking up wins by pin for the Wildcats were Austin LeTourneau at 112 pounds Dylan LeTourneau (125), Daniel Rothgeb in the 130 pound weight class, Austin Striggle at 171, and Drake Brainard at 285 pounds. Winning by decision for the Wildcats were Colton LeTourneau (103), Jordan Gilbert at 119 pounds, Cody Bays at 135 and Cord Feasby at 160 pounds. In the final round Columbia City faced Wawasee, while Whitko squared off against Bishop Dwenger. Against the host Warriors, Columbia City got pinfall wins form Kissinger at 112, Ethan Craig at 125 pounds, Coyle at 152 pounds, Pettigrew at 160 and Parker at 189. The Eagles also got decision victories from Bryce Forrester (103), Joe McCullough at 130, and Nathan Strange at 215 pounds for a 42-30 win over the Warriors to finish the day 3-1. “We finsished the day 3-1 and for the most part the kids wrestled pretty well,” said Eagle head coach Jeff Slain. “We were a little soft in the morning match, but we came back and wrestled well for the most part.” The Wildcats completed their sweep with a 49-24 win over Bishop Dwenger. Winning by pinfall for the Wildcats were Busz at 103, Gilbert at 119 pounds, Dylan LeTourneau at 125, Busenbark (140), Striggle at 171, Tyler Newsome at 215,and Ben Hinora at 285 pounds. Austin LeTourneau at 112, Daniel Rothgeb (130), Cody Bays at 135 pounds and Austin Striggle at 171 pounds all recorded wins by decision for the Wildcats. Daniel Rothgeb was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. “It was a pretty good day,” said Wildcat coach Matt Koontz. “Its always good to do well in the first meet of the year, and we are really happy with the win.” |
