Annual cancer day moves to Kroger store Print E-mail

The recent closing of the Scott’s Food Store in Columbia City left many people wondering if some of the community-oriented activities sponsored by the store would still continue.
Well, the good news is at least one will continue – the annual Cancer Day event.
On that day, proceeds raised in the store are donated to the American Cancer Society.
This year, however, the Cancer Day event will be held at the local Kroger store.
Wednesday Kroger and Scott’s stores throughout northeast Indiana will donate two percent of the day’s sales to the American Cancer Society.
“Around $4,000 is usually raised at the Whitley County Cancer Day,” said Sara Goff, community representative for the American Cancer Society. Goff, a Whitley County resident, said the amount raised locally has been consistent over the past several years.
“Over $105,000 is raised in Northeast Indiana,” Goff said of the amounts raised each year in this area through Cancer Day.
In addition to the proceeds from sales on Cancer Day, Goff said the store will also offer customers the opportunity to round up their bill with the overage supporting the American Cancer Society. This “round up” campaign will continue for ten days after Wednesday.
Goff said volunteers are still needed to fill two-hour shifts at the store that day. Volunteer duties would include bagging groceries.
“We would like to see around 10-15 volunteers per two hour time slot to help bag groceries,” Goff said.
“We begin at 7 a.m. and end at 9 p.m.,” she said, “so we are looking at a total of 70-100 volunteers for the entire day.”
Volunteers are an important part of the Cancer Day event, according to Goff.
“The American Cancer Society is nothing without our volunteers,” Goff said. “Without the volunteers to bag the groceries the customers and ultimately the donors will have to wait in longer lines which could turn them away from participating in Cancer Days in the future.”
Goff hopes local residents will also help spread the word that Cancer Day is, indeed, happening this year.
“The more people who shop on that day, the more money raised for the American Cancer Society’s mission to eliminate cancer,” Goff said.
