It’s that time of year when the young and young at heart will hit the streets in search of the biggest haul of candy they can find.
To help ensure that everyone has a fun time and makes it home safely to enjoy the fruits of their labor, local county and city police have offered the following tips for safe night out:
• Wear reflective clothing
• Carry a flashlight or some type of lighting device
• Use sidewalks when going up to homes and don’t cut through yards
• Be sure to have adults present with young children
• Children should not enter a stranger’s home even if invited
• Homeowners should not invite children inside unless they know them or their families
• Use sidewalks when possible
• Examine all candy before eating it
• Homeowners should keep pets inside and away from the door that trick-or-treaters will be using
Ghosts and goblins, witches and all manner of characters may trick-or-treat in their respective communities on Wednesday.

Columbia City: 6 to 8 p.m.
Churubusco: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Larwill: 6 to 8 p.m.
South Whitley: 6 to 8 p.m.
Parents who want to check the safety of the candy their children collect may have it scanned between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Whitley County Courthouse.

In addition, there are some children's Halloween events at a variety of places that have been dropped off to The Post & Mail newsroom.
• The Oaks and Oak Point are hosting the Great Candy Giveaway from 2 to 4 p.m. today. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes.
• Miller's Merry Manor family-friendly safe Halloween 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
• Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church  hallelujah party, with games, food and candy and prizes, 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.
• The YMCA halloween party with games, activties and costume party is from 2 to 4 p.m. today
