CCHS’s Doepker to retire Print E-mail
Saturday, November 24 2007
By CHRIS MEYERS
Staff writer

After serving Whitley County Consolidated Schools for 13 years, Columbia City High School Principal Steve Doepker’s retirement was made official at Tuesday’s board meeting.
“I think retirement is the best job I’ve ever had,” board president Don Armstrong said to Doepker regarding his retirement at the end of the 2007-08 school year.
“It’s (retirement) is the award for having worked all these years,” he said, and wished Doepker the best of luck in retirement.
Board member Lynn Workman also wished Doepker the best of luck in whatever he pursues after the end of the school year.
“It’s unbelievable to think I’ve been in education for 40 years,” Doepker said, during an address to the board.
Doepker briefly spoke to board about some strides made at CCHS during the past decade, although he acknowledged brief statements were not his forté.
Focusing on expulsion, suspension rates, he said the most recent data from 2005-06 school year showed CCHS’s suspension/expulsion rates to be much lower than in the past.
According to data recently compiled by the The Indianapolis Star, CCHS had 58 suspensions during 2005-06, to give it a rate of 5.03 suspensions per 100 students.
The county-wide rate for all schools in the county was 17.99 suspensions per 100 students.
Doepker also touched on academic achievement in recent years and the progress of advanced placement courses and overall achievement.
“We have more academically abled kids at CCHS than in the history of the school,” he said, adding there are more AP classes as well and higher test scores.
He said honor roll rose from 293 students to 310 most recently.
“We’ve implemented some very educationally sound principles,” he said.
