Woman faces six years for selling drug |

By TJ HEMLINGER Staff writer A 53-year-old Columbia City woman pleaded guilty to dealing in a schedule II controlled substance and faces a minimum of six years in prison because she has a prior felony conviction. Dorothy L. Arick admitted she sold fentanyl, an opioid analgesic with a potency 80 times that of morphine, to an undercover informant in March. She could get up to 20 years in prison for the Class B felony. She will be formally sentenced Jan. 7 in Whitley County Circuit Court. In other cases: • Jason L. Burns, 23, of Columbia City, had a bench warrant issued for his arrest after he failed to appear to answer charges of violation of his home detention. Burns had been sentenced to eight years in prison with four to spend on home detention in March 2004 on a charge of burglary and two counts of theft. In November 2005 he was found to have violated the terms of his home detention and was sentenced to three years in jail. In his most recent case, the probation department reported the prosecutor that he tested positive for cocaine and marijuana Judge James Heuer set his bond at $50,000. • Delbert L. Johnson Jr., 27, of Kendallville, was in a deferred prosecution agreement and was in court to answer a charge he was behind in restitution. Johnson still owes $315 but told the court he was to start a new job this week and could resume making payments. Heuer gave him until Feb. 25 to make progress. • Ronald B. Thompson, 26, of Columbia City, had his jury trial on charges of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old postponed. He was released on his own recognizance and will wear a monitoring unit. He also was instructed not to have any contact with the alleged victim or her family. • Keith A. Aalsma, 50, of South Whitley, will have his final pre-trial conference on a charge of child molesting, a Class C felony, on Jan. 14. • Susan D. Puckett, 50, of Columbia City, received a restricted driver’s license. Her license had been suspended for 10 years in 2002 when she was declared a habitual traffic violator. • Rhonda J. Truex, 41, of Warsaw, entered the deferred prosecution agreement in lieu of facing a charge of check deception, a Class A misdemeanor. Five people failed to appear to face charges they violated the terms of deferred prosecution agreements and had bench warrants issued for their arrests: • Adrian Martinez, 33, of Huntington; • Kimberly A. Stefanatos, 34, of Columbia City; • Sheila M. Hammons, 29, of Columbia City; • Christina M. Brown, 27, of Columbia City; and • Dustin W. Baldridge, 23, of Silver Lake. |
