Columbia City received approximately eight inches of snow total in three different snowfalls recently, leading to mounds of snow piled in the downtown area as melting snow and rainwater led to flooding in various parts of the city. Steve Brown, the city’s street department manager, told the Board of Works Friday morning that his workers will begin removing snow from downtown next week. Brown said there was flooding in Columbia Shores, Westgate and along South Line Street. “The flooding in Columbia Shores was three times worse than in years past,” Brown said. In other business Friday morning, parks department head Mark Green reported that there was flooding in Morsches Park that reached the concession stand. “The mud and the dirt left behind a film that needs to be cleaned,” he said, adding that workers will be on the job Monday morning. His crew has been busy cleaning handicapped parking spaces downtown. Fire chief Tom LaRue said there was flooding along Swihart Street and that his men had been placing sandbags to hold back the high water. Electric department head Larry Whetstone said that his crew had the street lights on Chicago Street back up after an outage. Terry Wherry, head of the communications department, said he is in a three-year program to replace all the city’s communications computers. He also is running a software update, and the entire system will be checked for viruses. |
