By CHRIS MEYERS Staff writer For the second year in a row, Columbia City High School’s student publication, Upsilon, has received a national award — this time an even more coveted award than in 2006. The publication received a Superior-Nominated for Highest Award from the National Council of Teachers and English. According to a letter from the NCTE, 453 schools from across the country entered the 2007 program with 62 being nominated for the highest award possible of which 20 received the highest rank. Amy Johnston, Kirsten Schneider and Libby Winebrenner were student editors for the 2007 Upsilon, which had 89 pages and featured the work of 57 students. The art included photos, paintings, pen-and-ink drawings, ceramics and glass work. The writing included poems of various types, song lyrics, short stories, essays and a drama piece. Copies of Upsilon were in high enough demand that all copies have sold, according to Mary Helfrich, who teaches sophomore and junior English at CCHS and was the faculty advisor to the publication for the first time in 2006. Fellow staff members Chad Moore and Marcia Stauffer are also faculty advisors. The publication is funded by the high school’s administration. |
