Man appears in court for allegedly not paying required restitution Print E-mail
Tuesday, April 08 2008

By TJ HEMLINGER
Staff writerA Leo man who had pleaded guilty to seven counts of theft and ordered to pay nearly $190,000 in restitution was in Circuit Court Monday morning to face a charge that he was in arrears.
William E. Garwood still owes $63,361 and had been ordered to pay $1,000 a month in 1996 but had fallen behind. He told judge James Heuer his health prevented him from making payments. His last payment was May 23, 2007.
Heuer gave him five months to get his affairs in order and resume making payments.
In other cases Monday:
• Sarah J. Pattison, 30, of Columbia City, pleaded guilty to a charge of forgery, a Class C felony with a maximum sentence of eight years.
She admitted cashing a $467 check at the place she worked that she said another woman had stolen. The pair then had a man come in the store and cash the check where Pattison worked.
Pattison told Heuer she had a prior felony conviction, and as a result she may have to serve a minimum of two years.
• Jamie L. Slemp, 29, of Columbia City, was in court to face a charge of violating her suspended sentence by failing to pay restitution.
Prosecutor Matt Rentschler said she owed $1,912 and that no payments had been received since October.
Slemp, who had pleaded guilty to check deception, was ordered to pay $50 every two weeks and to pay $156 in court costs once the restitution was made.
• Andrew E. Engdahl, 23, of Columbia City, failed to appear to face a charge of violating a deferred prosecution agreement by not making payments. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and his bond was set at the amount of restitution.
• Shane R. Hans, 20, of Huntington, failed to appear to face a charge of violating his deferred prosecution agreement. His cash bond was set at $225.
• Thomas E. Patches, 52, of Cromwell, remains in jail on a bond of $10,000 following his arrest on operating while intoxicated in Noble County.
He was on probation following a charge of attempting to aid in the manufacture of methamphetamine.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with six to serve in November 2004 and was placed on probation in January 2006. Heuer will hand down his ruling Monday.
• Amber N. Hartman, 20, of Columbia City, had her pre-trial conference on charges of forgery and theft continued until May 12.
Her attorney, Brad Baber, plans to enter a defense of insanity or mental defectiveness and wanted her examined by a psychiatrist.
• Roger Mathias, 48, of Larwill, had his request for a probationary license taken under advisement. He was declared a habitual traffic offender in April 2003 after three DUIs. Since then he has taken substance abuse treatment and has quit drinking, he told the court.
• Halley T. Stier, no age or address listed, requested his 12-year sentence for burglary be modified. He has paid restitution and has served the requisite amount of time, Rentschler said.
Stier spent three years in prison and has been on work release. His release date is Dec. 12, 2010.

My Mom (Elly Crawford) would always make this Cranberry
Salad, to die for. The year she passed away I had tried my mother-in-laws and others
but never the same as my Mom's. A year had went by and I had Looked and Looked for
her recipe in her old fashion Tin recipe box. Could not find it. I thought, wow was
this like her Famous Potato Salad, In her head and never wrote down. Silly I know
But as I searched thru her tin recipe box again, I made sure I put each hand wrote
card back where she had kept it. I wanted to make sure it was Just like my mom had
always had it and left it. I kept look one at a time, And low and behold stuck
between two cards was the recipe, I sat and held it as the tears ran down my face. I
had found it and was finally going to have Mom's Cranberry Salad. I called My Dad,
Cecil and said over 20 times, " Dad I found it Dad I found it!" I then prayed and
ask Mom, OK come on help me make this just like you did. And I guess Mom heard
me cause the 2nd and 3rd Thanksgiving without my Mom I had "Mom's Cranberry
Salad" and I will again this year and years to come. Thanks Mom I love you- Sheryl
xoxo P.S. You ask? Well share this recipe.... Umm, I
think NOT, Took me to long to find it. - Sheryl Hackett (Churubusco, IN)

My late grandmother, Margarette Ruthsatz always made
scalloped oysters for the holidays. The recipe would be similar to scalloped corn
but instead of corn, oysters. We always hoped for left-overs and often would sneak it
cold from the fridge! Someone brings this dish every year. - Pam Sorg (Columbia City, IN)

I love Thanksgiving. All my family get together at my mom and
dad's. My daughters and I usually go early to help Mom get the dinner ready, but she
does most of it. We eat about one and are all stuffed. After clean up we wait for
the paper so my sister and I can scope out all the sales for the next day which we
call Jackie and Laura's Big Adventure. It is the one day that we just spend time
together and are amused with all the shoppers going crazy for that perfect Christmas
gift. - Jackie White (Columbia City, IN)

My mother-in-law, the late Mildred Weeks, gave me this recipe
and it is the only salad I fix for Thanksgiving and I am willing to share.
