With summer fast approaching, the Turtle Days committee in Churubusco has big plans for this year’s celebration including live music and a beer tent. The festival will run from June 18 to June 21 and offer a variety of fun for all ages, according to the committee. Kirk Gray of the Turtle Days Festival Committee reported to the town council this week about work being done to get a block closed in town for some of the events. Town council member and Churubusco police officer John Hart said there most likely wouldn’t be any problems with closing a street for a few hours, but said the TD committee should check with local businesses as well. The closing was requested for the same day as the car show, with event organizers hoping that the multiple events would draw larger crowds and benefit all involved in TD. Many of the events are planned to occur on the same day in hopes of building attendance and offering something for people of all ages to enjoy. “They’ve really got a lot of great ideas that will hopefully expand Turtle Days,” Viv Rosswurm, president of the town council, said. According to Gray the talent show will also be bigger than in the past. Plans call for the beer tent to be open from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday with country music scheduled to be played. On Saturday, June 20, the tent is scheduled to be open from noon to midnight, with a mix of rock music from the 1970s scheduled to be played. At least one of the nights will feature a live band, and the police department said they would deal with any noise complaints that may arise, but were hopeful none would be reported. “It’s not going to happen every day. It’s just part of Turtle Days,” Hart said. There will also be either a reserve Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy or reserve Churubusco Police Officer at the beer tent. In keeping with last year’s altered parade route, this year’s parade will also come from the north on Main Street and turn off before getting to state Route 205. Hart and others cited safety and traffic concerns in not returning the route to the original route that came from the south on Main Street to the north side of town. |
