A Columbia City man was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital Thursday afternoon after the motorcycle he was riding collided broadside with a pickup truck in downtown Columbia City. According to the report, 48-year-old Robin A. Arms was southbound on Main Street in the passing lane when a pickup truck pulled out from a side street into his path. The driver of the pickup, 24-year-old Ryan W. Burkhart, told police he was pulling north onto Main Street from Mulberry Street, and that a person in line for the red light on Main Street waved him through a gap that was left in traffic at the intersection. Burkhart said he did not see the motorcycle approaching from the south when he pulled onto Main Street. Arms, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and struck the pickup truck. According to the report, he suffered severe bleeding from head injuries. Traffic on Main Street was shut down while the Samaritan landed and crews worked to clear the scene. That was the first of two motorcycle wrecks to occur Thursday in town, with another man, also not wearing a helmet, suffering head injuries when his motorcycle slid for more than 80 feet after hitting a patch of gravel, according to the crash report. The report stated that 31-year-old Joshua K. McMullen of Columbia City was eastbound on Chicago Street near CJ’s Drive-In when the wreck occurred. Yet another motorcycle wreck occurred Tuesday morning in the parking lot of Columbia City High School, not resulting in any injuries. According to the report, 18-year-old Garrett A. Allen of Columbia City told police he was going around the corner on the east side of the high school and hit the rear tire of a motorcycle in front of him. He then lost control and slid into the rear bumper of a parked car. According to the report he was wearing a helmet and did not suffer any injuries despite having marks on his pant legs from sliding along the gravel. |
