By CHRIS MEYERS Staff writer A Blue Lake resident who rolled a minivan Saturday morning was scheduled to leave for Iraq this week, and although he will not be considered AWOL for not reporting for duty, he will still face charges from either local officials or the military for his alleged actions, according to local police. According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Daniel Bornkamp was driving on McGuires Road at about 4:30 a.m. when his van left the road, struck a mailbox and landscaping stones and rolled, trapping the passenger in the car until Smith Township firefighters could free her. Bornkamp suffered a shoulder injury, and his passenger, Dawn Bornkamp, suffered a pelvis injury as well as other possible injuries, according to Sgt. Mike Engle of the WCSD who responded to the scene. Whitley County medics transported both Bornkamps to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, where military officials picked up Daniel Bornkamp and took him to Camp Atterbury, according to Engle. According to police there were several alcoholic beverage bottles and cans around the scene of the wreck that came from the van. Engle said toxicology test results are pending. |
