Post & Mail photo/Becky Hand Twenty-two hundred tons of leftover material from SDI is being donated to help pave the way to a better 4-H parking area north of the horse arena. John Murphy of The Levy Co., a parent company of Columbia City Mill Co. has donated the byproduct of steel production to the fairgrounds. It is harder and more durable than limestone and is made when limestone is added to iron ore and heated to make steel. The limestone pulls the impurities out of the ore and floats to the top which, when cooled, is crushed to size for base and fill applications for roadways. The large size resembles lava rocks. Greg Salesman of Salesman Trucking out of Churubusco is donating the final grading, and Kent Kneller and Adam Haegert of Kneller Excavating are donating the labor and equipment use for the excavation. 4-H, Inc. is paying for the trucking of the material. From left are Greg Salesman, Adam Haegert, Kent Kneller and John Murphy discussing the material dropped by one of the Salesman trucks, above.
