Kinder takes helm of agency Print E-mail
Wednesday, April 23 2008

Tuesday was his first day and his word for it was “Overwhelming.”
Dave Kinder has taken the helm of United Way of Whitley County, replacing Candice Yeakle, who recently left to become Parkview Whitley Hospital’s Foundation Director.
A native of Logansport, Kinder moved with his family a year and a half ago to Fort Wayne to work for the city of Fort Wayne as Neighborhood Revitalization Manager, working with tax abatements and running the rehabilitation of existing homes programs.
When asked about future plans for the United Way of Whitley County, Kinder smiled and remarked that so far he’s had good conversation, lunch and a tour of Columbia City, having been on the job for just a few hours. “I’m looking forward to working with the board of directors, volunteers and businesses,” he said Tuesday afternoon in his new office, “getting to know the people (of Whitley County.)”
Kinder started out as a sportswriter for the Logansport Pharos-Tribune, followed by manufacturing positions with Elco Industries (now Textron) as production manager and then operations manager for the metal stamping company.
Kinder has served as Housing director for the Area V Agency on Aging and Community Services, Inc. and for two years as Director of Aging Services, allocating services for the elderly. During his tenure Kinder says “370 affordable housing units, a couple senior centers, a mental health center, boys and girls clubs and a mental health clinic” were built.
He then moved on to a job with the state under the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority as a tax credit analyst, allowing building of low-income housing.
Kinder is married to Tammy and has four sons: Mac, 23; Sam, 20; Gabe, 10; and Nic, 7.
Kinder’s vision for the future would involve moving toward impact funding for children and the elderly. “In the past, agencies apply for funding and are funded. It never goes away,” said Kinder.
“People make the campaigns successful,” he pointed out, and he hopes to learn more about Whitley County and how best to serve the community.
