By SUZIE LANGOHR For The Post & Mail The Whitley County National Day of Prayer Committee has been very busy getting things ready for this special day President Bush has proclaimed as our 57th National Day of Prayer, which calls our nation to prayer. In the past 2 years, Mayor Fleck has read a proclamation for Columbia City at our annual Prayer Breakfast. This year Councilman Don Sexton will give the proclamation. We will be praying for our county and city leaders during this time. The committee will take cookies around on Wednesday to all of the police and fire stations to thank our police officers and our firefighters and to let them know that we will be praying for them. A prayer board was put up at the YMCA to receive requests from anyone needing prayer. The Y also helped to coordinate a Prayer Walk on their track from 12 to 1 p.m. on May 1. Parents, students, teachers, and administrators will be meeting at several schools on the playgrounds at 7 a.m to pray for our schools, children, and families. A noon prayer time by the local Ministerial Alliance will be given at the gazebo at the court house. That evening at 6:30 p.m., a program called “Hands Around the Court House” will begin. The community is invited to meet at the court house gazebo to hear Pastor Luther Whitfield, a dynamic inner city pastor with Youth For Christ, will speak. His church is in the neighborhood where the recent killings took place in Fort Wayne. He is trying very hard with God’s help to make a difference in a dangerous neighborhood. Last year we had enough people to hold hands around the court house. The public is welcome to come and experience a community coming together to pray for families, schools, police officers, firefighters, elected leaders, and our nation.
