It’s not who leads the longest just who leads at the end. After facing a deficit for most of its game at Heritage Saturday, the Lady Wildcat softball team slowly fought its way back before reeling off four runs in the sixth inning to beat the Lady Patriots 10-6. Whitko held the lead first but not for long. Heritage came out to grab a 2-1 lead in the second. The Lady Patriots extended that same lead to 5-1 in the third inning behind three consecutive singles. With a wakeup call in the form of a 5-1 deficit, the Lady Wildcats responded in the bottom of the third. Jennaca Juillerat and Beth VanHoozen reach base on singles before seeing fellow senior Jamie Westness belt an RBI triple to score two runs. A fielder’s choice scored Westness and cut the Heritage lead to 5-4. One run by both teams in the fourth inning kept the lead at one 6-5 when Whitko took one step closer in the fifth. Leading off with a single by Westness, two sacrifice bunts to move her around the bags. With two outs, an Heritage error scored Westness to tie the game 6-6. Then the sixth inning rolled around. Senior Kylee Boardman walked to start the inning before three singles by Rachel Juricak, VanHoozen and Audra Winger and a fielder’s choice drove across four runs. Westness closed out the 10-6 win for Whitko with a complete game pitched with six strikeouts. Westness improved to 11-2 while Whitko improved to 13-4. The Lady Wildcats head to Southwood today before honoring seven seniors Wednesday at home against North Miami. Whitko will also host Manchester Friday in a makeup game. |
