FORT WAYNE â Jessica Harrison, a Columbia City High School graduate, works as a disc jockey for 106.3 clickhop.com â but she didnât interview for the job in a traditional way.
A contest was held earlier this year to find a co-host for the radio morning show, âNugget in the morning.â Harrison turned in a video which was voted on by friends, family and the stationâs listeners.
After the video submissions were pared down, Harrison spent a day in the studio where she was on the air with the morning show talent. Listeners called in to vote and as the numbers were tallied, Harrison stood out among the rest.
âI took some video and radio classes while I was in high school,â Harrison said. âI wanted to be news anchor. I never really thought I would be here, doing this.â
Oasis Radio Group owns three stations servicing the Fort Wayne area. Clickhop.com, or 106.3, is unique because it can be found on the radio dial as well as streaming music online. The station labels itself as, âthe worlds first hip hop website with its own Wifi FM frequency. You click what plays next on 106.3 in N.E Indiana and clickhop.com world wide.â
Harrison, 24, and âNugget,â Sam Dababneh, host the morning show from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
But Harrison cautions those who might want to get into radio broadcasting as a career. Although a contest put her on the radio waves, Harrison said there is still much to learn.
Radio broadcasters have been feeling the pressure to mind their Ps and Qs in light of a recent scandal involving Australian disc jockeys. A prank call was placed to an England hospital inquiring about Princess Catherineâs condition. After much publicity over the easy access the radio hosts gained, the nurse who put the call through committed suicide.
Harrison said the tragic events surrounding what was meant to be harmless fun has impacted her and what she says on the air.
