Benedict recognized all three of Columbia Cityâs Final Four basketball teams, including the 2004 State Runner Up team. COLUMBIA CITY â Ten years ago, after Columbia Cityâs boys basketball team won its first and only semi-state game, which earned a trip to the state championship, Head Coach Chris Benedictâs post-game speech is still relevant today.
âThat night after the game I told them, âYou have no idea what you just did for our community, for our school and for our basketball program,ââ Benedict said. âAt that point, they had no idea what theyâd accomplished and how far theyâd come.â
A decade later, the impression they left on the community carries on, as many basketball fans still reminisce about the teamâs trip to Conseco Fieldhouse.
Whether they made the trip to Indianapolis or watched the game on television, fans, future players and former players were impacted by the game that night.
âThey were a special group of guys,â Benedict said. âTo play in the last game of the year is a big deal.â
Players, coaches and support personnel from the 2003-04 squad were back on the court at Columbia City High School for a recognition ceremony Saturday, along with Benedictâs other two semi-state teams from 2001 and 2011.
