A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE; Benedict honors final-four squads
COLUMBIA CITY — Ten years ago, after Columbia City’s boys basketball team won its first and only semi-state game, which earned a trip to the state championship, Head Coach Chris Benedict’s post-game speech is still relevant today.“That night after the game I told them, ‘You have no idea what you just did for our community, for our school and for our basketball program,’” Benedict said. “At that point, they had no idea what they’d accomplished and how far they’d come.”A decade later, the impression they left on the community carries on, as many basketball fans still reminisce about the team’s trip to Conseco Fieldhouse.Whether they made the trip to Indianapolis or watched the game on television, fans, future players and former players were impacted by the game that night. “They were a special group of guys,” Benedict said. “To play in the last game of the year is a big deal.”Players, coaches and support personnel from the 2003-04 squad were back on the court at Columbia City High School for a recognition ceremony Saturday, along with Benedict’s other two semi-state teams from 2001 and 2011.To read the rest of this story, see the Jan. 17 issue of The Post and Mail.
