SOUTH WHITLEY â South Whitley Town Council members put wastewater treatment plant engineers in the hot seat at Tuesdayâs meeting.
David Harvey and Rich Grant, representatives from Fleis & Vanderbrink Engineering, Inc., were on hand to give explanation as to the failures in several areas at the plant.
âWeâve had pretty intense rainstorms,â Harvey said. âThe storm in early August was significant.â
During several strong storms, the plant experienced flooding and back ups. Raw sewage overflowed into the nearby Eel River which is something the town could be fined for by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
âWhy do we have a system not staying together and not meeting IDEM requirements? I just donât get it,â said Councilman Steve Smith.
Although the storms were the number one source engineers wanted to place blame, Councilman Bill Boggs pointed out that manhole covers failed even in lesser rains.
