WCCS makes move to meet earlier in the day

January 6, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees changed the time of its regular bi-monthly meeting Monday night.
The board voted unanimously, 8-0 (Steve Hively was absent) to change the time of the regular meeting from 7 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The board meets on the first and third Mondays of each month.
The board discussed possible ramifications of the earlier time.
“The only thing I can see is that (5:30 p.m.) takes us traditionally through the dinner hour, when people sit down to supper,” said board member Tim Bloom.
He said the later time would give people a chance to have dinner before heading off to the meeting.
The biggest concern expressed by board members was the accessibility of the meetings to the general public.
Board member Stan Meyer said he was retired, so the time factor didn’t affect him, but he mentioned that 5:30 p.m. might be a bit early for people, even board members to get off work and make it to the meeting on time.
He suggested splitting the difference with a time of 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.
Brooks Langeloh said he didn’t have a problem with the earlier time and said the time could always be changed back if the general public opposes the earlier time.
“We’ll just have to wait and see,” said Board President Don Armstrong.
Armstrong was returned to the helm as board president in the election of officers, as was Bloom in the role of vice president.
Deborah Hiss was elected secretary.
