WCCS: Prepares 2013-14 school calendar

November 9, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — During the Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees meeting Monday, Columbia City High School Principal Jennifer Reiff notified the board that the district school calendar would be presented at the next regular board meeting.
“I met with the calendar committee Sept. 26,” said Reiff. “We looked at two options. One option was to start school Aug. 19 and end June 4. The second option starts school Aug. 12 and ends May 28.”
Reiff said she gained the perspective of the elementary school, middle school and high school levels as well as an athletic perspective.
“Teachers and administrators want to be prepared for the parent night they have on the first day of school,” said Reiff. “Also, we were looking very specifically at when assessments are offered. This is a huge situation when you’re looking at IRead-3 since it’s only offered for three days.”
Reiff said the committee who worked on the project also looked at the end of the trimester date.
“The trimester ends on a Friday. This gives teachers time over the weekend to get any extra grading done so the grades can be processed by Monday. They can begin the next trimester Tuesday,” said Reiff.
According to Reiff, the committee went with the second option, starting the school year Aug. 12 and ending May 28, which would include seven make up days.
