WCCS's 2011-2012 calendar discussed

January 6, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Christmas falling on a Sunday this year created a challenge for those making the calendar for next school year at Whitley County Consolidated Schools.
Jennifer Reiff, assistant principal at Indian Springs Middle School, presented a proposed calendar to the corporation’s Board of School Trustees at its regular meeting Monday night.
The proposed calendar is scheduled for a vote by the board at its Jan. 17 regular meeting.
Because of where Christmas falls this year, students will be attending school before and after the holiday break for partial weeks.
“I don’t think there is a perfect model with Christmas where it is,” said Superintendent Dr. Patricia O’Connor.
The students, according to the model presented by Reiff, will leave for holiday break beginning Thursday Dec. 22, attending school Monday through Wednesday of that week.
In January of 2012, the students won’t return until Thursday, Jan. 5, finishing out the final two days of that week.
Reiff said the calendar committee decided against bringing the students back on Monday, Jan. 2.
“Of all the schools I polled throughout the state,” said Reiff, “no student is coming back Jan. 2.”
The plan also calls for a fall break Oct. 7 (Friday), which is preceded by a parent-teacher conference Oct. 6, giving students a four-day weekend.
School registration is scheduled for Aug. 3 with Aug. 16 listed as the first day of school.
Spring break is the first week of April, 2012, which is April 2-6 and Columbia City High School’s graduation is set for Friday, June 8, 2012.
