WCCS: Staffers prepare for national autism conference

COLUMBIA CITY — Susan Christman, WCCS’s director of special education, Sue Corbin, the corporation’s assistant director for special education, as well as Melissa Dubie, with the Indiana Resource Center for Autism, are preparing to attend a national conference in Ohio on autism in November.
The welcome came after a proposal was written by the three individuals detailing the work the local school corporation has accomplished to meet the needs of autistic students.
“We will be sharing our experiences with moving from research to practice district wide within the project,” said Christman at the WCCS regular board meeting Monday.
According to Christman, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that one in 88 children have been identified with an autism spectrum disorder nationwide.
“Knowledge about autism spectrum disorders and professional development on best practices for working with students who are on the spectrum is key to meeting the student’s individual needs and creating a successful learning environment for all,” said Christman.
