CHURUBUSCO — When Whitko took the cross county trip to Churubusco Monday there was no question it was going to be a tight boys’ tennis match.
A rivalry will do that nine out of 10 times.
In a battle of singles verse doubles wins, the Wildcats used three points in singles to top Churubusco in the narrowest of margins 3-2.
With two singles positions reaching the finals of the Three Rivers Conference tournament last week, it’s no surprise that Whitko’s strength is in its solo players.
The Wildcats proved that not giving up a single set point the entire night to the Eagles.
Alex Winger continues a strong season as the Whitko ace beating ’Busco No. 1 singles Brian Murphy 6-0, 6-0.
Tyler Baugher and Nathan Sherrard also picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Baugher took his in No. 2 singles over Churubusco’s Caleb Bonar.
Sherrard rounded out play in singles at the No. 3 position beating Eagle Shawn Spencer.
The hosting Eagles got a share of their own success Monday.
While Whitko swept singles, ’Busco used two straight set wins in doubles to pick up two match points.
Jesse Lich and Brandon Wormcastle teamed up in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Whitko’s Tom Danner and Tyler Murphy.
At No. 2 doubles, Grant Stephan and Landon Pearson made quick work of Wildcats Seth Patrick and Blake Castle for a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
One junior varsity match went to Whitko. Doubles — Josh Smith and Avery Robbins defeated Keith Bohde and Andrew Biddle 6-0.
