Whitko girls beat Wawasee for first time in eight years

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s Lady Wildcat basketball team defeated Wawasee for the first time in eight years Tuesday night, 68-24.

The Lady Wildcats were 1-11 against the Lady Warriors in the last decade, including a nine-game losing streak.

Wawasee’s stand-out KiLee Kna-fel, who averages over 30 points-per-game, was held to just one point in the first half against Whitko and 12 for the game.

The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and again held Wawasee to two points in the second, while adding nine points to their score.

Wawasee got its offense going in the third quarter, scoring 12 points, but Whitko added 21 more to make the score 56-16 going into the final quarter. The Lady Wildcats scored 14 in the fourth while holding to Wawasee to single digits again (8) to make the final score 68-24.

The Lady ’Cats had three players with double-digit scoring; Karissa Olinske led with 16 points, Micaela Sylvester chipped in 13 and Katee Reiff tallied 12. Reiff was 4-for-6 in 3-point shooting and Sylvester shot 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Cagney Craig and Reiff led the team in assists with five. Olinske and Sylvester each had four steals.

The Lady Eagles are back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting Northfield for a noon JV tip-off.
