WABASH — Whitko’s girls basketball team pulled off an upset on Saturday, defeating Class 2A 17th-ranked Northfield on the road.
The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Norsemen by a final score of 42-35. The win moves Whitko up to 6-12 for the season and 2-4 in the conference. Northfield falls to a record of 13-4 and 3-3 in the Three Rivers Conference.
Both teams kept the game close throughout. Northfield led by three at halftime, 16-13. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter to keep the margin in favor of the Norsemen by three entering the final period.
Whitko slowly chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter. The Lady Wildcats went up by more than one possession when freshman Jennifer Reiff, battling illness, knocked down a layup to make it 36-32 with three minutes left. Whitko would hold on to this lead to bring the game to its final margin, with Cagney Craig sinking four free throws in the final minute to aid the Wildcats.
Craig was Whitko’s leading scorer with 15 points in the contest. Maddie Gawthorp , in the first start of her career, and Jordan Hall both had eight for the Lady Wildcats. Sydney Eltzroth was Northfield’s leading scorer with 14 points.
Whitko coach Brandon Bradley also commended the defensive efforts of Reiff and Melanie Kelsey, as well as that of sophomores Aly Nicodemus and Heather Bryan. He said neither team would give up easily.
Whitko will next be in action Saturday, hosting Wabash, before ending the season on Jan. 31 by hosting Lakeland Christian Academy. Wabash will carry a 12-6 record and 5-1 mark in the conference into the contest.
