WHITKO: Introduces three board hopefuls
PIERCETON — The Board of Trustees for Whitko Community School Corporation is preparing for board positions to be filled.Come November, three school board seats will be up for re-election and the candidates were on hand Monday night for a public forum to discuss their stance on the issues facing Whitko Community Schools.District One, which includes both Washington and Monroe Townships in Kosciusko County, has two candidates, Georgia Tenney and Phil Menzie.Georgia Tenney – District 1Tenney is originally from Illinois where she received a certification from Illinois Business College. In 1967, she relocated to Pierceton and was employed with Key Drugs, Inc. Tenney was also a secretary a Pierceton Middle School and Whitko Middle School for more than 32 years when she retired in 2011.Tenney said, “The time I spent at the middle school will always be a positive part of my life. Students, parents and teachers were my number one priority. I feel that with my experience, my community involvement and my connection to the people in the entire Whitko community, I will be a viable and useful school board member.”Phil Menzie – District 1Menzie is a graduate of Pierceton High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Taylor University. He and his wife, Debbie, have four children, three of which graduated from Whitko High School. Menzie currently is employed as an administrative assistant of business at Fairfield Community Schools. Prior to working with Fairfield Schools, he spent 13 years as the director of financial operations for Whitko.“With nearly eighteen years in school financial management, and still working each day in that arena, I believe I can be a board member who will be current on the legislation, state agency directives, tax issues and overall financial challenges that continue to face public education in Indiana,” Menzie said. “I see this as a great opportunity to serve the Whitko community with my professional experience.”District Three includes Cleveland Township where Joe Begley is running unopposed. Joe Begley – District 3 Begley graduated from Tri-County High School in western Indiana before receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Education from Purdue University. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Education before completing a teaching minor in Mathematics.Begley taught Agriculture, Mathematics, Computers and coordinated the I.C.E. program over a span of 33 years with Whitkco Community Schools. His two daughters graduated from Whitko High School and his wife, Diane, retired from Whitko Community Schools after 30 years of service.“Whitko has been a very important part of my life. I retired from teaching last June and decided to run for the school board to give back to the community by using my background and experiences in education to assist Whitko Community Schools on their vision of ‘Excellence for All.’ I would also hope that the whole community will redevelop a sense of pride in the school system, as it has an excellent product available to each and every student that desires to take advantage of the opportunities,” said Begley.In District Two, no candidate has filed for the position which includes both Jackson and Richland Township.For more information on the candidates, visit Whitko Community Schools’ election page online at www.whitko.org.
