Whitko places sixth at TRC wrestling tournament

DENVER â€” Whitkoâ€™s wrestling team competed in the Three Rivers Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday morning at North Miami Junior-Senior High School. The Wildcats finished sixth with 150.5 points.
Whitkoâ€™s Lane Wolf took the 120-pound weight class championship after entering the tournament unseeded.
â€śI thought our guys wrestled extremely well,â€ť said Whitko head coach Frank Bumgardner. â€śThey wrestled hard and showed improvement, thatâ€™s what weâ€™ve been working on the last couple weeks.â€ť
Whitko was comparatively short-handed, having wrestlers in 11 of the 14 weight classes.
Rochester won the tournament with 208 points. Host North Miami took second with 193, followed by Tippecanoe Valley with 178. Northfield rounded out the top half with 159.
Southwood finished in fifth with 156 points. Whitko came in sixth with 150.5. Manchester was seventh with 141.5. Wabash finished last with 78.
Wolf entered the TRC tournament having a previous record of 6-2. Wolf pinned each of his three opponents on his way to winning the 120-pound championship. In the first round, Wolf fell North Miamiâ€™s Gideon Gipson at 1:13. Wolf beat the first-seeded Seth Moon from Rochester by fall at 2:33 of the second round. In the 120-pound championship, Wolf pinned Southwoodâ€™s Zach Gunter at 3:29.
Whitko had three other wrestlers make the championship match of their respective weight classes.
