COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County's Relay for Life was recognized for its fight against cancer.

The nonprofit division of the American Cancer Society held its annual 24-hour walk in June with results that surpassed the event's goals.
At a leadership conference in South Bend, the county's relay received three awards for the fundraising and awareness efforts in June.

An All American Award was presented to the county for its continuous efforts to present a relay event that captures the spirit of the Relay for Life organization and the American Cancer Society.

The Pacesetter Event Award is a designation given to the relay event when it reaches its financial goals before the event concludes.
Whitley County accomplished this before the day of the relay and exceeded its financial goal by more than $7,000.

The final award was given to Whitley County for growing the number of participating cancer survivors the day of the relay.

As Whitley County prepares for its 2014 event, which is slated for June 6, teams are currently being registered to participate in the 24-hour walk.

The relay is held each year to generate funds and awareness for cancer research and patient support.

Monies raised stay in Whitley County to specifically target local residents that are battling cancer or have been touched by cancer.
