Woman admits to child neglect

January 9, 2014

COLUMBIA CITY— A woman accused of felony neglect of a dependent in connection with a local sex abuse case pleaded guilty this week in Whitley County Circuit Court.
Joy D. Hughes, 38, of Kendallville, was to stand trial next week, but pleaded guilty to child neglect by abandonment, a Class C felony.
Hughes will be sentenced Feb. 3. Her attorney is Brad Baber.
According to a representative from the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office, Hughes agreed to a plea arrangement which gives her a fixed period of incarceration of five years.
At sentencing, Judge James Heuer will decide if Hughes serves that time at the Whitley County Jail or is sentenced to the Indiana Department of Correction.
