ROCHESTER — Despite the treacherous snow, Whitko (7-7) traveled to Rochester (8-6) Saturday night in hopes of picking up a conference win.
After having a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats let their advantage slip away and fell short to the Lady Zebras, 59-47.
The Lady ’Cats jumped out to a quick lead and barely held it through the final seconds of the first quarter, when the Zebras hit a three-pointer to put the score at 16-15.
Senior Rachelle Kessie led Whitko with 10 first quarter points, 14 for the game.
“They changed defense and we made some unforced errors and panicked, we got on our heels and they took advantage of that,” Lady Wildcat head coach Rob Bell said.
Whitko was down by four points with less than 40 seconds left in the first half, when Nicole Slaymaker made a three-point play to cut the Lady Zebras’ lead down to 25-24.
Slaymaker along with Reiff led the Lady ’Cats in rebounding with four apiece.
Rochester continued to gain on its lead throughout the third quarter.
“Once we let them back in, we couldn’t recover,” Bell said.
Karissa Olinske finished off the game for Whitko with five fourth-quarter free throws, that were no answer to Rochester’s 22 points.
Olinske led the team in free throws, shooting 7-of-9. She had 13 total points.
“We still had chances to get in and we’d get to the rim, but couldn’t finish,” Bell said.
