COLUMBIA CITY — A fun and healthy fundraiser known as Zumbathon provided a hard workout for a good cause Saturday. The fundraiser was held at the First Church of God Gymnasium.
Pat Mossburg, the religious communities director for the Whitley County Salvation Army, said the Zumbathon was held for “A Sole Purpose” — a program to help money for new school shoes and backpacks for local children in need.
“We are about half way to our goal,” said Mossburg. “We’ll probably keep collecting monetary donations through mid July.”
Mossburg said the goal has gone up to $10,000 since other places lost funding.
With the help of the Zumbathon, Mossburg was able to add over $130 more to the goal.
“Several area businesses donated door prizes,” said Mossburg. “We had about 20 prizes.”
Several certified instructors participated in the fundraiser, and Mossburg credited Deb Aldrich, the Zumbathon organizer, with the idea.
“I just organize it because I do Zumba at home, and I have certified instructors that I know who were able to do this.”
The Zumbathon brought Latin and Hip Hop inspired dance to the gym.
“The dance instructors make up their routines and do all their choreography,” said Aldrich.
Beth Talarico, Abel Rosado and Christy Tucker and Lauren Hoyt, all came out to help lead the Zumbathon, teaching community participants how to work out.
“We will bring kind of what we’re used to doing, several routines with different rhythms, and inviting everyone to follow,” said Talarico from Fort Wayne.
Before beginning the hard workout, the instructors knew even on an incredibly hot day, this was all worth it.
“The reason I came out here was to raise money for the children, helping give them backpacks and shoes,” said Rosado. “That’s our future.”
The door prizes were provided by Exotic Nails and Hair, Arby’s, Pizza Hut, Color Me Tan, Auto Zone, Kernal Coladas and Culligans Memory Lane Antiques and Gifts.
The Zumbathon fee was $5 for a two-hour workout.
