LITTLE TRAFFIC ON CITY STREETS: Early Sunday travel at a bare minimum

COLUMBIA CITY – Skeleton work staffs were in place at Columbia City merchants, with many stores and restaurants contemplating closing at noon on Sunday, due to the Super Sunday Snowstorm blanketing the area.

It is advised to call ahead to see if businesses are open.

City Street Department crews were out early trying to keep pace with the winter storm that will only intensify this afternoon.

SUPER SUNDAY SNOW IS HERE: Wet snow pummeling Whitley at an inch an hour, will intensify this afternoon

Wet, heavy snow fell on Whitley County and throughout the region early Sunday morning at a rate of more than an inch an hour – and the Super Sunday Snowstorm will intensify this afternoon.

More than 3 inches of snow had fallen by 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Ultimately – by Monday morning – the area may see in excess of 15 inches of snowfall.

A Winter Storm Warning, of course, is in place. Residents are advised to stay close to home.

Hazardous weather...

* heavy snow...10 to 15 inches storm total. The period of heaviest snow expected during the daytime hours on Sunday.

* Blowing and drifting snow...especially Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

Impacts...

* periods of heavy snow with blowing and drifting snow making travel difficult or impossible. Some unplowed roads will become impassible.

* Blowing and drifting snow Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.

An open invitation has been issued to Whitley County residents to photograph their winter life during Super Bowl Weekend, Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1.
Photo submissions to this special Post & Mail community project will be featured in a unique newspaper publication to be published in late February.

The National Weather Service in northern Indiana has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow...which is in effect from 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ this evening to 4 am EST /3 am CST/ Monday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

SUPER SNOW? Super Sunday here predicted to be deeply snow covered

NORTH WEBSTER – We could get a super snow for the Super Bowl here Sunday.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for all of Northern Indiana – including Whitley County – from 7 p.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday. Total snowfall amounts across the area are expected to be in the 6 to 12 inch range.

“Our confidence remains low to medium on the exact track and area of the highest snowfall amounts, but it looks as if most of the area will see at least 6 inches of snowfall,” read a statement late Friday by the National Weather Service at North Webster in Kosciusko County.

INFLUENZA: County avoids first round

COLUMBIA CITY — Despite approximately 85 flu-related deaths in Indiana, local health officials say Whitley County has avoided a major outbreak — so far.

In mid-January, state health officials announced that there were 85 influenza-related deaths in Indiana, including 19 in one week.

Heather Reid, from the Whitley County Health Department, said so far, no cases have been reported to the office by the state department of health or Parkview Health; however, not all cases are officially reported.

TREASURES FROM THE MUSEUM: Restoring a bridge to the past

COLUMBIA CITY — One of the functions of a museum is the preservation of the artifacts that form the bridge from the present into the past.

The Whitley County Historical Museum undertook just such a project recently in the restoration of a painting of Alexander Jackson Douglas.

Douglas may not be familiar in his own right to many in the community, but one of his 15 children ranks as one of Columbia City’s more famous favorite sons.

AWARDS: 21 given to Indian Springs art students

FORT WAYNE — Several Indian Springs Middle School art students took home 21 Scholastic Art Awards at the annual competition in Fort Wayne this month.

Three Gold Key, eight Silver Key and 10 Honorable Mentions were awarded to the young artists.

There were 4,486 total entries in the contest, and 273 Gold Keys, 161 Silver Keys and 136 Honorable Mentions were awarded.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS: Weather closes, delays school again

Icy roads have interrupted school schedules again this week.

Whitley County Consolidated Schools went from a two-hour delay to a three-hour delay and eventually closed Friday morning.

Whitko had a two-hour delay and Smith-Green Community Schools was under a three-hour delay.
