SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team picked up a win in its first Three Rivers Conference game of the season Thursday.
The Wildcats shut out Southwood, 1-0, behind a two-hit pitching gem from Alex Stoddard.
Whitko drew first blood immediately, scoring what proved to be the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning. Tanner Gaff crossed the plate on a single from Zach Snep. Gaff also had the lone extra-base hit of the night, a double.
For Stoddard, he threw seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and two walks and striking out 13 enemy batters.
The win lifts the Wildcats to 9-4 overall, and 1-0 in the circuit. Whitko next plays Saturday in a doubleheader at Southern Wells at 10 a.m.
SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls tennis squad fell to Wabash Thursday. The Apaches topped the Lady Wildcats by a final of 4-1.
Laura Alfieri and Candace Swick earned the lone win for Whitko at number-one doubles in three sets.
In singles action, Abby Marshall and Laura Hippensteel both lost in straight sets. Aressa Tackwell lost a close three-setter in singles as well.
Whitko’s other doubles pair of Mikyla Findley and Erin Murphy lost in straight sets to their Apache foes.
The Lady Wildcats will next compete against Tippecanoe Valley.
SYRACUSE — Whitko’s boys golfers were second at a four-way meet Thursday.
Host-Wawasee took the meet with a score of 149.
Whitko came in second at 183. Manchester and South Bend Riley came in third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 189 and 202.
The Warriors had the top three golfers, including the medalist, Luke Jackson, who carded a 34.
Cole Bechtold led the way for Whitko, shooting a 41 to tie for fourth overall. Danny Zawlocki had 44 and Colton LeTourneau was at 45 for the Wildcats.
