SOUTH WHITLEY — What started out as a dream for Hugo Fox became a reality in 1949 as he established a Bassoon manufacturing company in South Whitley.
Hugo had played the bassoon for the Chicago Symphony from 1922 to 1949 and had dreamed of creating his own version of a bassoon for years.
It took two years to get up and running in the Bassoon business, but by 1951 Fox Products was producing twelve instruments a year.
The company has grown exponentially since then, now producing over 100 instruments a month. Most of the instruments are bassoons, but Fox Products also produces contrabassoons, oboes and English horns.
Last week, more than 40 people with the Columbia City Rotary Club were treated to an after-hours tour of the Fox Products facility courtesy of longtime bassoonist expert Erich Zummack, who has been with the company more than 22 years.
