Rachel M. Verba, 89, formerly of Columbia City, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Liz, in Noblesville where she had been residing since August 2012.
She was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Whitley County, a daughter of Leo and Huldah J. (Palmer) Miller.
Her formative years were spent in Richland Township. She graduated from Larwill High School and completed her nurse’s training at Ball State.
On Feb. 3, 1951, she was united in marriage to Alexander Verba in the Hungarian Reform Church in Cleveland, Ohio. They made their home in Cleveland until 1953 when they moved to their home in Richland Township. Mr. Verba died Nov. 23, 2003. In 2005, Rachel moved into Columbia City.
A registered nurse, she was the Whitley County health nurse and Whitley County Schools’ nurse until her retirement in 1978.
Her memberships included Troy Presbyterian Church.
Surviving relatives include four children, Elizabeth (Russ) White of Noblesville, Alex (Teri) Verba of Osceola, Susan Meads of Huntertown and Charles (Tammy) Verba of Angola; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, JoAnn Kemery and June Adams, both of Columbia City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Troy Presbyterian Church, 6465 W. Lincolnway, Columbia City, with visitation after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church. The burial will be in Troy Presbyterian Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
