Sherman W. Kneller, 91, of Columbia City, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010 at the Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.
He was born Oct. 6, 1918 in Washington Township, a son of Sherman L. and Bertha H. (Luecke) Kneller. After graduating from Washington Center High School in 1936, he farmed, worked at the Myers Creamery and also drove a taxi cab in Fort Wayne.
In 1940, he founded the Kneller State Farm Insurance Agency which he continued to operate until his retirement in 2000.
From 1942 until 1945, he served in the U.S. Army.
On Nov. 10, 1945 he was united in marriage to Marjorie May Plattner. They spent most of their married life in Columbia City. Mrs. Kneller died Aug. 11, 1999.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, serving on the church council; American Legion Post 98 serving as the commander from 1948 to 1949; a life member of the home committee; the Columbia City Elks; Columbia City Rotary; a Paul Harris Fellow; member of the National Association of State Farm Agents; and had served on the Columbia City council.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Rebecca Curless of Columbia City; two grandsons, David Reid of Maui, Hawaii and Todd (Heather) Reid of Columbia City; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Reid; a sister, Clela Richard of Tulsa, Okla.; and a brother, Paul R. Kneller of Columbia City.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael and two brothers, George and Ray.
In keeping with the wishes of the Kneller family, there will be no public visitation. A private family service will be held Wednesday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Pastor Joyce Gerwing officiating. The burial will be in Eberhard Cemetery with the American Legion Post 98 presenting the military honors.
