COLUMBIA CITY— The title “mayor” can mean a variety of roles and responsibilities, dependent on who sits behind the desk and what city that desk is in.
Several of Columbia City’s Councilmen agreed that the city’s mayor’s position is worth more than its current salary — $56,600.
“I want to come up with a plan to pay our mayor more,” Councilman Dan Weigold said. “When you look at what all Columbia City’s mayor is responsible for, it’s quite extensive — he’s running a multi-million dollar operation.”
Weigold was referring to the city’s utilities. While Columbia City provides its own water, electric and sewer utilities, other cities don’t.
“Looking at evaluations of other cities’ mayors, the pay scale is all over the place,” Weigold said. “Some don’t have utilities to deal with, some do. I think it’s fair to say our mayor needs to be paid adequately for the work that’s being done.”
In the U.S., the average salary for a mayor is $62,000 — nearly $6,000 more than Columbia City pays its mayor.
Weigold made mention of the community’s questions of whether the mayor’s position is full-time or part-time.
