WHITLEY COUNTY— Although statistical indicators for infant mortality are grim in the state of Indiana, local agencies are working to lessen the threat among Whitley County mothers and babies.
In 2011, the infant mortality in the state was measured at 7.7 percent. In Whitley County, the rate was 7.33 percent in 2010. However, in 2009, it was only at a 4.85 percent.
In Indiana, the infant mortality rate for 2011 was 7.5 for every 1,000 live births. That ranked the state in the top 10 in the U.S.
