FORT WAYNE — A windy afternoon greeted area boys’ tennis teams as they opened the postseason Thursday.
The weather wasn’t the only thing both Columbia City and Whitko had to battle in the Homestead sectional, however.
Both facing a state-ranked opponent, the tennis season ended for Whitley County squads with 5-0 losses.
The Eagles had the tallest task taking on sectional favorite No. 6 Canterbury. The Cavaliers proved they could beat Columbia City with a 5-0 win over the Eagles in the regular season.
Not much changed in the second meeting with Canterbury winning every match point in straight sets.
The No. 1 senior doubles duo of J.T. Biggs and Alan Murphy looked to take a one-loss season deep into the postseason up early on Canterbury’s Collin Williams and David Hurley.
Despite leading 5-4 in the first set, the Eagles fell 7-5 before going on to lose in the second set 1-6. Murphy and Biggs ended their season together with a record of 18-2 overall.
No. 1 singles senior Dylan Hinen also gave a strong first- set battle to Cavalier Pat Downs. Hinen took Downs to a one-point lead late before falling 4-6, 1-6.
Sophomore Derek Hinen had his two losses of the season come at the hands of Canterbury with Davis Huber beating Hinen 6-0, 6-0. Hinen finished up his first full season in singles with a record of 18-2.
Two other seniors finished up their careers for Columbia City.
Cole Craven teamed up with junior Gabe Boles for a 1-6, 1-6 loss in No. 2 doubles. Craven and Boles lost to Canterbury freshmen Chris Yahanda and Clay Hoffacker.
Senior Travis Johnson put up one last fight in No. 2 singles against William Wright. Johnson finished the season 12-8 after a 1-6, 0-6 loss.
