COLUMBIA CITY — After a 10-year dry spell, Columbia City’s Police Department is looking to hire its second new officer in 10 years.
Last year, CCPD Officer Jon Stoffel was hired in as the first new officer to the department in a decade, replacing a master patrolman who resigned from his position.
This year, the CCPD is adding another officer to the force, as Master Patrolman Mike Petersen was selected to serve the area’s youth as the Whitley County Consolidated Schools resource officer (SRO).
Petersen, who formerly patrolled the streets third shift, will officially take his position as SRO Jan. 1, 2014, leaving a void in the CCPD schedule.
CCPD Chief Tim Longenbaugh sought and received approval from Columbia City’s Board of Works last week to begin the application process for a new officer, which is expected to be hired in March.
