WHITLEY COUNTY — While Whitley County Consolidated Schools and Smith-Green Community Schools remained closed for the entire week after Sunday’s snow storm, Whitko Community Schools operated under its regular schedule Friday, and a two-hour delay Thursday.
Whitko’s decision has some parents up in arms, and even keeping their children home despite schools being open.
“We are keeping our kids home today,” said Whitko parent Amy Lochner. “I feel this is extremely irresponsible of the school system. Why couldn’t they at least delay school so it is light out for bus drivers to see.”
According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, a Whitko school bus slid off a county road with three children inside.
Whitley County Sheriff Deputy Paul Rennaker said there was minor damage to the bus, which slid into a stop sign at the intersection of CR 950 W. and CR 1000 S.
While none were injured, many parents are questioning the decision to risk safety for school.
