COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County residents pay a variety of taxes, but as the dollars are deducted from paychecks and as taxes are charged to properties, where does the money go?
Auditor Jennifer McGuire keeps track of tax dollars for Whitley County, and tries to make sense of state statutes, County Commissioner and Council mandates, as well as budget need for various departments.
“There’s a lot that goes into the money the county takes,” McGuire said. “I’m a taxpayer, too. There are times people are frustrated over so much of their paycheck going to the county, but it funds a lot of key areas.”
When county officials approved the two-year CEDIT plan, the dollars dolled out come from Whitley County residents’ income.
“It’s a really small percentage — .002329,” said McGuire. “However, when you add that all up from each person in the county, we have a substantial fund that allows the county to tackle some bigger projects.”
CEDIT, which stands for County Economic Development Income Tax, originally came with stringent parameters on what the fund could be used for. Now, as the state has loosened the language, the CEDIT dollars have more opportunity to be spent.
